Both XP SP3 and Vista SP1 are rock solid for install, they had a couple bugs when they first came out but have been solid ever since.

after the SP's are out for a month they are pretty solid after that point, and those have been finished for over 6 months now, so yea.

I went for SP2 when that first came out and never had any problems there for XP. The beta for Vista's SP2 also went on well.

The initial problems are seen with certain hardware or software configurations until the corrections are made to the service pack or instructions are provided at a company's support site for any problems seen with certain models

For the rest of us no worries while it's still a good idea to make a restore point as a precaution in case of seeing a bad install.
