Default Help for a friend...weird computer problem

I have a friend who has the following custom built system:

CPU- AMD Athlon XP 2600+
Motherboard- Biostar M7NCD Pro
RAM- 512 MB Kingston ValueRAM
Operating System- Windows XP Home

Today he called me and I can't figure out what would cause the following problem. The computer will be working fine, but about every 5 minutes the screen will freeze. The weird part is it doesn't freeze completely. The window that is being typed in works fine, but everything else freezes. For example, he said he was typing on AOL Instant Messenger, and he could type fine in one window, but the other 3 chat windows were frozen. This doesn't sound like a hardware problem, because the computer works fine normally. I figure this is a Windows problem, but if anyone could shed some light on this I'd be very happy. Thanks for the help.

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me". -John 14:6

The solution to all problems like that, re-instal. Probally a virus/spyware - incl. AOL!.

Wrong forum btw.
