Default DVD RW will do everything but play DVD's

I just bout a MSI DVD-RW, the DR8-A. I installed it and found out that it plays cds and video games, but when I try and play a DVD it freezes my whole computer up to where the mouse wont even move. Never really had a freeze issue like this since windows 98 . Anyone have any suggestions? I have updated the firmware already. I am running it with a HP cd writer plus 9100. I tried running it alone and it still froze up my computer .
