Astaro is a nice looking enterprise firewall that has a free edition for home users with minor limitations, so I decided I wanted to try it out. On my home network, I have a Motorola Modem, Linksys Router, 4 desktops and one wireless laptop. I have a spare computer, an eMachines T2958. However, the motherboard and power supply are blown. I have a replacement power supply from Coolmax or something I got on newegg. The question is, can any motherboard work? Or does this particular eMachines model require proprietary parts?
Also, it was suggested to me that if I were to use the spare eMachines desktop as my firewall that I should ditch my router. It was explained to me that using the router would just be another hop in the process. So I should get a switch to replace it and do something like this...
Modem - eMachines Firewall - Switch - Desktops/Laptop.
Is that a wise move? Can somebody suggest a really cheap switch (minimal of 5 ports) that would work?
