My old Processor (Pentium D @ 3.4Ghz) used to idle at 75 degrees Celsius in the summer. Maybe that makes you feel better.

Yeah those temps are nasty, 48C-50C is my load temps when my room is cool!!

You probably just had bad contact and or used too much/little thermal paste...
