Question FreeNas and SSDs

Hi people,

Looking to build a freeNas with 4 to 8 SSDs 512GB each.

Never used this before and wanted to know
if it's OK to install on a USB so all the drives are free for ZFS?
or just install on one of the drives?
would ZFS still be able to ultilize the SSD drive if freeNas is installed on it?

Also would it even be recommended to use SSDs , would TRIM and GC still work?

Seems like it would be better to ask those questions here: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php

I don't use FreeNAS so I know nothing about it. Almost all setups like that should be able to run off a flash drive.

I think it's best to run FreeNAS from an SSD but if you are on a budget it's fine to run it directly from a USB flash drive. That way, you can still use all of your drives to create the array. If you use one of the SSDs for the OS you will not be able to include it in your ZFS array.

You just reworded his question into a statement. Way to go.

he asked if it's OK to install on a USB so all the drives are free for ZFS. I said it wasn't best practice but it is OK to do it.

He asked if ZFS still be able to ultilize the SSD drive if freeNas is installed on it. I answered that no, it would not, which is the advantage of using the flash drive.

Not really sure how that's a rewording of his question, but ok.
