What is the advantage if any, of installing IPSsec on a Windows Server while using PPTP on the client side for the explicit use of Remote Desktop?

In additon to using IPSec on the server, if I wanted to install IPSec on the client side, how would I accomplish this (please, no third party software).

I'd also like to know if there are any other ports that need to be opened beside 50. 51 and 500.

Lastly, I tried to follow this site (below) for setting up Windows Server 2012, and tried unsuccessfully to do the same with Windows 7. Can I do this the same way in Windows 7? Please help.

IPSec would only be useful if you were using it to encrypt traffic over your VPN link (with L2TP most likely not PPTP). What routers do you have at each site? If it's cisco/juniper/etc gear then you can setup a direct IPSec tunnel on the routers and not have to worry about configuring clients at all.
