cable modem.
why do you ask?

ARGGGHh... I still have problem, althought not as much.
very fustrating.... it happens on 2 of my workstations.
Not sure if it happens on server or laptop... not really on those 2 machines much.

Try some of the tools in my sig. I'm sure you have already. Instead of wasteing your time, I would just back up any important data and reinstall the o/s. If it still does it, then you know you got a hardware or ISP problem.

1. i asked because i wanted to know if your computer was as crazy as mine, if my dad leaves his on to long it slows my internet connection. (as he keeps it on 24/7, i have to reboot his computer every now and then)
2. try this:
a. Start -> control panel -> network connections -> right click -> click repair \
b. if not call your ISP
c. Last result is a format
d. let us know how it goes! :)

Just encountered this same kind of thing at a customers house today. both computers where filled with spyware and each had a few trojans. Cleaned them all up and still couldnt get either one to have more than a 1k d/l speed. Internet is cable. I installed the network some months ago. Never seen anything like it. They barely connect to the internet in any form, if at all. Anyone else run into this?

From what they told me, one computer did it then not too long after that so did the other.

well, I have little different situation.

I'm online ALL the time,
my email never seems to have a problem - checks every 3 minutes.

sometimes, about 5-8 times during the day... whenever I goto a URL or type one in... I get 404 error, etc.
-- i refresh --- might come up or refresh again.. then it comes up.

very strange, odd...

I think it HAS to be something with the browser itself....

my connection is 98% always fast.... other 2% is just the net.

bad thing... restalling ALL MY SOFTWARE is not a simple, quick task... talking 10+ hours

I do have a backup, etc. which will speed up the process -- can't remember if that back up was done before/after the problem existed :(

thanks

PS. what is:
Have you tried an LSP fix or a socks reset?

don't have jijack :)

okay.. not its driving me crazy... more info:

It has to be something on the browser, etc.

I type in a url and anyone of these things occur:
1) it loads as it should
2) it returns a page not found error - not true though
3) my google toolbar still registers a PR, meaning that something data is being sent/recieved
4) I hit refresh a few times and it the page loads as normal
5) the url changes to www.www.domain.com.org --- or some variation of that ?? pretty weird stuff

thinking of hiring a "network or virus " specialist guy, etc....
but feel they will not be able to find it???

something is up and it is not normal!!

THANKS

What browser are you using? Try a different one and see if you have the same problem. Have you also checked your registry entries for anything that should not be there?

On Firefox, and maybe IE I'm not sure, when you type a URL and it cannot find it, it will try every variance of it. Ex: If you type this.com and it does not exist, it will try www.this.org, .net, etc... There might be some extra value somewhere in the registry that is telling the browser to add said prefix or suffix to url. most likely remnants from some DDoS or other type of Malware.
