Hi,
I need to network my computer with my brothers computer which is on the first floor. We both have windows xp installed and we both have a NIC. Can you pls tell me the basic necessities to network both our computers. Do we need a straight or cross paired network cable?. Thanks in advance.

If you are connecting them directly to one another without a switch you need a crossover cable.

If you both have pc's on different floors do you both have internet ?
If not : Buy a router

If you're trying to share an internet connection, the best solution is to buy a router with 10/100 ethernet ports (relatively cheap), then use straight through CAT5 cable and connect both NIC's to the router, and the router to your modem.
