How Does Linux work?

Just wondering how linux works, is it a new OS, does it work on windows? do windows programs work on it. just a small summary might help.

Linux is basially an operating system. You can either use GUI or SSH which is like remotely connecting to it from another machine and run stuff off your machine, such as Apache, FTP Servers and Shoucast even.

linux if independent of windows; a separate operating system. nothing the same between them. to run windows programs on linux you need a special program like wine but they stil dont work that well

i just started looking at Linux, and i'm very interested. are most games compatable with it? can i run linux and windows on one PC????

yeah, i notice that when i boot up, there's a screen that has a list titled "Operating Systems" but XP is the only one on there.
