I'll see if my PCI NIC works in another PC (if I can get access to one)
maybe I will try another PCI 10/100 NIC also, they don't cost much anyway.

try this out.. every time i've had the problem you described it was corrupt TCP IP stuff.. most likely it will do the charm. (hopefully)

Make sure your router allows wired connections
