We have an older Dell Optiplex that is not used for much other than transcription. The keyboard stopped working so I replaced it. Reboot, login screen comes up, keyboard does nothing. Mouse works so I shut down. Try the keyboard on another machine, works perfectly. Put it back on the first one and the same thing, won't work to log in. PS/2 keyboard BTW. SO I reboot and see if it will let me into the BIOS. Yep I can hit the F2 and get into the BIOS and do whatever I want. SO I get a brand new USB keyboard. Exact same results. SO I pop in the XP disk to try a repair install thinking maybe a file is corrupted. The USB keyboard won't hit a key to boot from CD. Shut down, connect PS/2 keyboard as well as USB, power on and VOILA I can hit a key to boot to CD on the PS/2 board. I could use either one to select what to do after booting to disk. What in the name of gravy is going on here? Repair is running right now.My head hurts...
