I just bought an e6750 and motherboard...is there an "ideal" way to put on the thermal paste? Does it really matter as long as the entire surface is covered?

TP goes between the CPU and heatsink only. You apply a grain size on the center and put the heatsink on. Then you tighten the screws so that the pressure would spread the TP.

Which thermal paste are you using? The stock heatsink has thermal paste already applied.

If you are using Arctic Silver, it should be used like mentioned above. You should try to get just enough to cover it. Too much is not good.

If your planning of using after market TP then make sure you take off the Aluminum sheet of metal thats on the heatsink, and like peter said a grain size drop is to put on, but i usually put on 2 since the thermal surface on the CPU is bigger than the older cpu's use to have e.g Pentium 3
