windows 8 laptop

A friend of mine has a laptop that is a few months old but is having a small issue. When she powers it up it just stays on a black screen. It doesn't reach HP splash so she holds down power button foe 30 secs before the machine powers off. She will then power it up it and it boots up without issues. Any ideas what could cause this?

The laptop isn't by chance going to sleep for whoever is done using it shuts it down , at which point you go through this startup routine with the black screen?

Do the lights or anything come to life when the laptop is powered on and you get the black screen?
