I would say more "horribly unoptimized" rather than "ahead of it's time" .

Doesn't it still run kinda like crap even on CPU's nowadays?

How can you optimize for a lack of power without seriously hampering your product? That's how consoles work.

I've been able to run GTA IV fine since I had the i5 750.
