My best friend had a Compaq with an AMD in it. Mind you, the PC was just used from creating Word files and such and surfing the internet. The Processor quit after two years, and my cousin HAD an AMD Athlon that died last week. He had it for about 3 years. Frankly, they look really good at NewEgg.com, but the potential lifespan just scares the **** out of me

Of course if the CPU overheats, it could fry. This is true for Intel CPUs as well. Older AMDs didn't have thermal protection, so if it got too hot, it would just cook itself.
