I remember a while ago I had a program that increased my gamma beyond what the monitor normally allowed it to go to, but I cant remember its name now. anybody have any idea?

You can do it with ATi Tool, or with ATi Catalyst Control Center. I'm sure you can do it with the software that came with an nVidia product aswell.
