you can use Apache as a web hosting package, their are several other packages available for you, it would be best to use a hardened operating system such as BSD.
it would also be good for you to use an independent box aside from the one you use for most other tasks to have an independent machine. You may also have to use something such as dynip so that you have a constant connection with the web with your ip if you are using a cable provider. yet most providers do not provide for much uploading bandwidth.
their are tutorials on doing this sort of thing its always a good idea to do some reading.
