Apple axes single-CPU PowerMac

Apple has confirmed that it's dropping the only single-CPU model in its PowerMac G5 range, the 1.8Ghz model. The Apple Store now showcases three dual-CPU Macs with the Dual 2Ghz model starting at $1,999.

AppleInsider correctly predicted the move last week.

When the PowerMac G5 was introduced in the summer of 2003, Apple priced the entry-level 1.6Ghz model at $1,999, although this was slashed by $200 later that Fall. The single-chip 1.8Ghz Mac had been in the Apple lineup since October last year priced at $1,499.

But the PowerMac no longer needs an entry-level discount, as the entire range is gradually being shunted towards the exit, in preparation for the migration to Intel. The move means Apple can eat through its inventory of obsolete IBM processors a little faster than before.
