OK, I tried, and IE makes good icon shortcuts. (But interested how you get 2 with the same name, as mine won't allow it). But what does this prove? If you'd asked me to do this a few days ago, I'd have said 'no probs'. What I'm tring to find out is what's gone wrong and how do I fix it ...

Ok, suddenly today the icons all changed (not after turning on or reboot) ... leaving my desktop as the attached pic ... some icons went blank, some have a Firefox logo. John

Okay, just tried all this ... max icon cache size made no difference, and I don't have Infrarecorder on my laptop. Each time I turn on the laptop the icons have gone blank. John

CarnageX, as I said above, this no longer works. For instance - previously when on Google homepage I could drag the URL icon onto the desktop and it would give me a shortcut complete with the proper Google logo icon ... but now it just gives me a poor Firefox icon. It doesn't do what it used...

Most of the icons are shortcuts to web pages, and are made by simply dragging the URL onto the desktop, which creates its own icon. But now, if I do this, it just gives it a (poor quality) Firefox icon. Other programs, such as Word for instance - I can easily recreate the icon as you suggest...

When I switched on my laptop today most (but not all) of the desktop icons have turned into what looks like a white blank page of paper. I tried logging out and back in ... no success. I tried rebooting ... no success. I googled the problem, and it said I needed to delete iconcache.db and...

OP here, None of the programs you all suggested will run - they load ok but then I get error messages similar to the others. Thanks
