coby 8024 weak wifi signal

hi All ; I just bought a coby 8024 touch pad and it doesn't pick up my WiFi signal in the room i need it too. Both my laptops did.(1 died, thus the new toy). I have a trend-net 54mbs router. 2 questions:

1- should i try a new router ? If so how do i tell signal strength? (budget 50)
2- can i add a usb wireless adapter and hope that works
