XP wont update after re-install

I had to re-install XP on my desktop, after it finished installing I tried to update all of the needed Microsoft updates.
First message was- you need to update your browser.
I tried updating and got the next message- unable to install because you don't have the critical patch updates needed, click here to update.
Clicked and got the first message again.
I went in circles for about an hour before i finally quit.
I also set the automatic updater to on but it is not working either.
Don't know if it matters but it is SP2

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
