Wireless Signal Queries

I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless router connected with Cat6 cable to a computer running Windows XP Professional. I have a laptop running Win XP Pro/Fedora Core with a Linksys wpc11 wireless card. I am in the next room from the router, and am connected as a 'good' signal at 2mbps. This sucks for speed, no? There is 1 wall and no other interference with it. Any suggestions on getting better range? External antennas would be cool, but don't work with wpc11 I believe.

consider moving the wireless router around see what works best.

Please recognize that building walls can do a number on signal.
and Double check all your settings.
