I'm looking for an entry-level IT position, so far I have discovered the following, and I would like to know what prospects they offer. By prospects I mean advancement in my career, as in going from Programmer to Senior Programmer. If you can, approximate time required to work in the position to get that advancement would be appreciate too, but mostly I am interested to what positions they can lead to.
1. Software programmer (C++, JAVA, etc.)
2. Web programmer (PHP, Javascript, etc.)
3. Web designer (CSS, basic HTML, Photoshop, etc.)
4. Clerk at a hardware store (advising customers on what's better, taking orders and giving shipped merchandise, etc.)
5. IT Specialist (setting up new systems for the whole office, helping your colleagues with any IT problems they may have, e.g. broken PC, need a new mouse, etc.)
6. IT Engineer (at a specialized computer fixing shop - troubleshooting hardware and software errors, ordering new computer parts, reinstalling OS, restoring lost data, etc.)
7. IT Administrator (checking if the services on company's server are running, if there are no bugs or attack attempts, updating software, doing basic server maintenance, etc.)
I'm particularly interested in the bold positions, so if you don't have much time, please prioritize on them. And do mention any positions somewhat similar to the bold ones if I've missed them (talking only about entry-level, I'm a 1st year college student).
