Unable to delete .AVI files in Windows XP operating system

Hey leave every thing and follow me
1.press ctrl-alt-del
2.end the process explorer.exe (dont panic)
3.on file select new task
4. type cmd
5.use dos (i wont teach you that) to delete your file
6.select new task again
7. type explorer
8.tank me a lot

Actually I do know how to do this. Thanks for your help, but do you imagine that if I am looking for a registry edit I don't know how to use basic windows functions?
Two problems with this approach:
1) It doesn't always work.
2) It is a lot of hassle to go through every time I want to delete, move or rename a movie file.
Thanks anyway, but I'm looking for a more complete fix. There must be one.
