have a fedora 8,just install vncserver
then have a winxp at my house, installed ultravnc to have a remote access to fc8.
but could not connect, ultravnc error is failed to connect to server
i already turn off the firewall of fc8.

any idea? thank you very much.

Check the IP and make sure the VNC server is running. You also might need to specify the display, but that would probably give you a different error.

I assume you're trying to do this between two computers on your LAN?

my vncserver is running and specify the display
the 2 computers are in 2 different location.from office and from my house.
in my ultravnc client when i check the configure the MSRC4Plugin-122.dsm
it says that
checking the environment variable %msrc4pluginkey%
Not found.

Do you have a router at home? If so you're going to need to forward the port(s) on your router to allow connections from outside your LAN.

I think it uses 5900, I'm not sure. Look it up or something, I haven't used VNC in ages.

i dont have any router.my pc is directly connected to dsl modem.

i change my vncserver config

VNCSERVERS="1:myusername"
#VNCSERVERARGS[1]="-geometry 800x600 -nolisten tcp -nohttpd -localhost"
VNCSERVERARGS[1]="-geometry 800x600 -localhost"

and yet no progress

You might have to forward the port on the DSL modem then. I know you do on mine.

I know with Ubuntu you actually have to be logged in locally for VNC to work. Is the user logged in locally on the Fedora box?

BTW: Port 5900 is the default port for VNC.

you don't have to be logged on locally for vnc to work! it depends on how you have it set up. on my pc i followed some guide and it included a script that will start the server daemon when an attempted connection is made.
With default settings, yes you do.

Of course, there are ways around this an other things you can do to not have to be logged in.
