I think I've been hit with a virus? My Norton Antivirus doesn't work. It still comes up briefly if I manually click on it, but before it can start up it just disappears off the screen. My media player mysteriously was deleted. When I try to turn my puter off, it gets as far as the screen saying windows is shutting down then seems to freeze. The only way I can shut it down now is to push the power button on the tower. I've gone to Trend and ran a virus scan from their site and it comes up clean. There is a pop up that appears at the beginning telling me to reboot my computer to fully remove the trojan. I clicked the OK button but my computer didn't reboot it just continued on with the scan. What are my options, I'm running Windows 98. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Taz

Yeah, you've got something going on there. That popup at the beginning of Trendmicro's scan is NOT part of their procedure. It's likely the trojan itself in self-preservation mode. It's disrupting the Housecall scan. In other words, it detects an antivirus scan going on and throws in a popup to fool you into disguising it by clicking on that reboot button. Just because it says "reboot" or "close" on the button doesn't mean it will. That is how devious these things are now.

You're running Windoze98. Hit Crl/Alt/Del and paste the running processes into here. If anything looks unfamiliar to you, say so.

Apart from what you've mentioned so far, do you have any other unfamiliar happenings going on there? Regular popups? Homepage changes? Disconnection issues?

All that info and anything more you can tell us will help to identify this probable trojan.

Once we know what we're dealing with, ridding your machine of it will be easy.

BTW. Don't panic!!! Most are a nuisance. Just don't use your credit card online until your machine gets a clean bill of health.

Enternet
Lexpps
Explorer
Systray
Wmexe

This is what appears when I hit Crl/Alt/Del. I'm not sure but enternet and lexpps do not look familiar to me.

Thanx

OK there's more to the story now. I've checked my system configuration utility under the start up tab. I found a line with exploer in it, not once but twice. Also the text size in IE was changing to the largest size only when I moved my mouse or scrolled or something. I would change it back to medium but when I scrolled or anything it would instantly change to largest again. It did that a couple times but it just stopped as suddenly as it started. When I tried to reboot my computer after applying a couple of changes that I knew were safe in the system configuration utility I had to go to the start button on the screen and reboot it that way which it did no problem.

Hi Taz202

if your still having a problem

then do this

this program will give us a rundown of whats happening.

First, create a folder for HijackThis in the root folder of your hard drive so it can make proper backups

example

C:/HJT/hijackthis.exe
C:/hijackthis/hijackthis.exe

next

Click here to download Hijack This. Save it to the folder you have just created

Close all open windows and open HIJACK THIS. Click “Scan”[/b] . When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to“Save Log”. Click on“Save Log” and save it to NotePad. Copy the entire log and paste it here.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET , most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed. Wait for someone to analyze the scan and advise.

If you have anything disabled by MSConfig or any other startup manager, please re-enable it before scanning to post

I hope this will help

Nice one, LobosBlanco

I must download that newfangled HijackThis. ;)

Personally I prefer to ghost regularly and restore from Norton Ghost when things go awry. But then, I drive a network of 30 public machines and to manually clear those spybots and viruses on a twice daily basis.... Without the ghost I'd be making a whole lot of work for myself.

Nice dodgy prog. spotting with Taz's machine though.

Cheers mate

---------------------

Taz!!

Once you have your machine up and running smoothly again, download ZoneAlarm freeware. It's a personal firewall which I recommend to anybody and everybody. Takes a little time to learn how to drive it but you'll get there. Also download SpyBot Search and Destroy and AdAware free. Both are dodgy cookie and temp file removers. Some say they won't run on the same system simultaneously, but they can and will. Run them both regularly. Even weekly.

Keep in mind that Symantec (Norton) and TrendMicro (PC-cillin?) are rival companies and NOT swapping remedies. If one AV program doesn't pick up a virus, the other may.

Enough ranting from me.

Cheers all

Hey thanks a bunch for the help. Everything seems back to normal. What exactly did I have, was it a trojan or spyware or what? Anyway I know it's at least partialy why you're here but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your looking into this matter and quickly too I might add.

G'day

you had a varient of Gaobot virus

I do this all the time but mostly in other forums.

the rest of those programs you listed in your msconfig are legit programs

Your welcome
