search engine frustrations

Is there a way I can block Google from feeding me stuff on its page that assumes I have an interest in local information?
Of course I do but I would rather not be spoonfed this information (and advertising) by Google.
Is there a search engine that allows you to search the web and where the searches are not dictated by how financially beneficial they are to the particular search engine?

NoScript and AdBlock seem to work for me.

I'm pretty sure in google's settings you can disable it from prioritising local pages.
