Running computer as server........

I have a constant connection through cable. I was wondering if anyone had ideas of a free way that I could run my computer as a server so people can log onto a certain folder and download something. I would also like it to be a fairly simple way.

Dude, if you can get hold of a linux OS, you wud have one hell of a server. FTP,MAIL,HTTP,NEWS server software are integrated with most of the linux versions and all are for free. Thou you need some time to learn and setup stuff in linux. But it is worth on the long run.
