Reformatting a new Acer laptop

I believe the key wont work on a different copy of XP, but im basing this on a key that I got off a IBM ThinkPad laptop so I could be wrong , but if you have a copy of XP from Microsoft then you have the key provided from Microsoft which will work. As for voiding the warranty thats something you need to find out by reading the warranty information that came with your laptop

Formatting the drive and installing your own OS does not void the warranty.

If the product key on the laptop is a Windows XP Professional Edition key, then you can use that OEM key with a retail version of Windows XP Professional Edition.
