Right i keep getting emails saying so and so has added you as a friend, yet when i log into my account i dont get any prompts to say someone has added me? nor do they appear in my friends list?

Once you've logged in, look at the top-right of the screen. It should tell you how many friend requests/invitations/notifications you have. Click there...
