Common Sense to geeks is not common sense to average users. So while it may seem like common knowledge, it isnt. My wife didnt know the first thing about protecting her PC till I taught her. So it cant be said to be common sense. That is only for Geeks and Nerdy Nerds.
It is possible to have an AV Program make viruses. Just like it is possible that they flag innocent files as infections and brick systems. After all they are just programs that operate off of a definition file. Replace it with an infection file, viola. You have the AV creating infections instead of getting rid of them.
