OSI model in your own words

hello everyone...i have to memorize basic OSI model by thursday morning...the N+ book i was issued is incredibly technical and i'm just a beginner so this is all kinda overwhelming...i wanted to reach out a shot in the dark and see if you could enlighten me a couple functions of each layer in plain english so its easier to memorize for me:

Application layer: 1

as i said this is a complete shot in the dark but any help would be GREATLY appreciated...i had 3 days to memorize the chapter and this is my biggest weakness
