two 250GB drives in RAID 0, however there is no redundancy with that system, so if you are storing important data on these drives, use 4 250GB drives in RAID 0+1. That is what I am doing for my machine, but with 1TB drives

I don't raid 0+1 is the best way to go if you want to have speed and safety for your data have a look at this site its explains raid really well

if you can afford it, i would get an ssd as a main OS/programs drive and get a seperate hdd of w/e capacity you want for data storage.
