ok thanks

i currently have 2x128 MB sticks in my mac. what would be better performance wise: another 2x128 or a 256 MB stick (aiming for 512 MB total)?

Go for 2x512 for 1gb. PC100 SDRAM isn't that expensive, so it'd be alot more effective to buy 1 gb.

2x512 will cost me around $250 off newegg, which is more then i wanted to spend.

Also, doesn't each slot support a max of 256MB??

That is Apple's claim. The actual supported RAM is 512mb in each slot.

If 1gb is too expensive, just go with second best. I was just making a suggestion :)

strange, why would they claim it to perform worse than it does?

The Yosemite G3 had four PC100 3.3v unbuffered 8byte non-parity 168 pin SDRAM slots. At the time, 256mb sticks were about as big as you could get. But after vendors started producing 512mb sticks, the PowerMac actually supported them. So, Apple didn't lie or anything, they just didn't know. :p
