n00b question about ethernet

hi everyone, im new here. I'm designing my new computer, and I realized that i have NO idea about anything involving networking or internet access. What do i need to be able to use my computer with my cable modem? Is an ethernet card necessary? and if so, which one should i get?

here is my design for my computer, if it helps at all.

motherboard: Asus P4P800 Deluxe P4 DUAL-DDR
CPU: Pentium 4 3.0GHz 800MHz
RAM: Atlas Precision Brand - PC3500 1GB DDR
hard drive: Western Digital 80.0GB (WD800JB) 7200RPM
video card: VISIONTEK RADEON X800 PRO 256MB
sound card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster (SB) Live! 5.1
cd/dvd burn: Lite-On LTC-4816H 48X24X48 + 16x Internal EIDE CD-RW & DVD Combo Drive OEM w/Software
floppy disk: TEAC 1.44MB Black Floppy Drive
case fan: VANTEC AeroFlow VP4-C7040
power: Thermaltake W0014 Silent Purepower 480W


any advice at all would be GREATLY appreciated. Heck, if you have any other advice about my computer design, feel free to tell me.

that board should have a LAN/ethernet built in. That's what I would use to connect to any external modem, like cable/dsl whatever. so no need for anything else.
