MY Gateway PC Hard Disk Lost?

I had my GATEWAY NOTEBOOK PC on all night and in the morning I found this message:
"Windows failed to load because the system registry file is corrupt"

I did my best to try to recover but without success. I am a programmer, not a hardware person. In the process I finally got the messages:

"PXE: E61: Media Test Failure, Check Cable" and
"PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent" and then
"Operating System Not Found".

And when I attempeted to do a restoration, I was told Hard Disk not found.

Fellows, I have so much stuff on this system, I will die if I have to lose them, including a book I am writing...PLEASE HELP ME RESTORE AND RECOVER. Sorry I hadn't backed up my system.

What Operating System are you running? XP or Vista? Will need that before we can get any further.
