About the ESD protection
ESD straps are great, and yes, I agree, never work without something to protect those components.
However, I don't care for straps as I am way to clumsy, and have a horrible habit of just grabbing parts. (too many hours on the farm i guess ) I like to use non-powdered latex rubber gloves. This stops the ESD, and it also keeps the oils from you skin from destroying contacts.
