In the US, state militias were around to protect states against centralized (federal) power. But the state militias were federalized in 1916 and became what we know today as the US Armed Forces.

There are still non-federal militias in existence today. If I remember correctly, all able bodied men from 17 to 60 in Michigan are in the militia automatically. :D So I am in some sort of military. Training is what most need.

Umm...the Militias changed into the National Guard. Each State has it's own unit.

Militia's are in no way military today though

Anyways, on the subject.

I think there should be something like an ROTC program for a full school year rather that active or guard duty.

I was in JROTC for a year...terribly unorganized but that's because it is a highschool program started in 1918 to prepare for war against Mexico if need be. But...college's run the good ROTC programs today.
