I just bought a new HP Pavilion A520n PC that runs on the Windows XP home edition.

My old computer was a custom made one from a local shop and is running on Windows 98.

Is it feasible to transfer all my programs from the old computer to the new one? And how would I even do this?

Or might it just be better for me to try to install everything from start?

Do you mean installed programs or just files? I think the best and easiest way to transfer files is with a network. A network adapter in each pc and put a linkover cable in it. And then some small settings..

Windows XP has a nice utility called "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard."

It will help copy all of your files from your old pc to your new one. They have to be connected though, you can connect them with a crossover cable, network or just put your hard drive from your old PC on your new one as a slave drive and the utility will do the rest.
