iTunes disk reading problem

i have recently started putting my cd collection into itunes and everything seems to go ok. But, after a while a cd will stop importing and the computer freezes up. This has happened a number times. The cds are fine but its like my computer just stops.
Does anyone know what would cause this?
specs:
iMac 800MHZ powerpc g4
256 mb memory
OSX Panther
Superdrive
iTunes 4.7

Wow... what a strange thing. Have you tried doing other things with the drive, like DVD playing, to rule out a drive problem?

Yeah actually I watch DVDs quite often on my iMac, and they never seem to have any problem what so ever. So the drive problem is ruled out. I just think it has something to do with iTunes maybe. Still can't figure it out.

Well the drive problem would be the only thing that I could think of. Im pretty stumped as well.
