If you are running Windows XP, why not use system restore. If you are running linux or some other version of windows, I would suggest Symantec Ghost, available on the Ultimate technicians CD V 3.0 for free
With those tools, you can set a "state" in which to go back too if something messes up. Draw back - you will have to set a new state if you add something you like/want to keep.
As for HP, that only restores your system back to factory settings. Fine and all, but What if you want to experiment with programs but not take the 16 hours or so it would require to use the system restore disk AND add all your favorite software/settings.
