Yeah, I'd kinda like to try linux.

I was talking to my friend, and he was telling me about this "Linux Supergamer" but he really didn't know much about it.

My question is, can I play BF2 and other games on Linux? He said I should be able to with this SuperGamer thing...what is it and how does that work?

What about drivers for my hardware and peripherals? How do I get linux versions?

Thanks.

You can play BF2 and other DirectX games in Linux, but its a pain in the arse. I have never heard of SuperGamer, perhaps he is talking about Cedega. Just use Windows for games. There ARE, though, native Linux versions of Doom 3, Quake 4, UT2k4, WolfET, RTCW, etc, and they work perfectly.

Drivers, well, most hardware is supported by default, you won't need to install drivers, as the kernel has them built in. Since you have an ATi card, well, good luck. ATi Linux drivers are a pain in the arse, you most likely won't be able to get them to work. However, the nVidia drivers are freaking fantastic and work perfectly.

Peripherals, well, most printers work, some scanners work, you can search Google for "[device] linux" and find answers. To get Linux, find the distro you like, I prefer Debian, and go to their website and download it. Most distros offer a torrent to make things easier and faster.

etc etc etc

The Super Gamer Live DVD is a re-master of the Distro PCLinuxOS. this DVD consists of Free Demo, and opensource versions of games. Now about running Windows games under Linux you will have to find an emulator for games like BF2 as I don't think it is ported to Linux yet(?). Program emulators such as Wine or Cedega will serve your purpose, be warned they are slow and buggy. just use Synaptic (PCLOS program management system) to find all the components you need. just have a play with it and see what you come up with!

As for your Question on Drivers and such, General is right again most hardware is supported by defult, so you shouldn't have a worry, if you do post back and we'll give you a hand

Where to get Linux versions:

http://www.livecdlist.com/
http://www.linuxlinks.com/Distributions/
http://www.distromania.com/
http://iso.linuxquestions.org/
http://distrowatch.com/
http://www.linux.org/

and When in doubt about ANYTHING: www.google.com/linux

but I also agree with the general in his main statement, If you want to game STICK WITH WINDOWS!

if you want to check out some other distros try:

Kubuntu
http://www.kubuntu.org/

Mandriva
http://frontal2.mandriva.com/en/downloads/mirrors

PCLinuxOS
http://www.pclinuxos.com/page.php?7

This is the distro I use and recommend, Why because it works right out of the box. No need to configure Everything, everything just works. It also comes as a 1 CD install that is a live CD that you can install later if you wish.

hope this Helps

what about Fedora Core 5? no one mentioned it

Some people here like to mention or recommend their favorite distro to new comer because it's what they prefer, it's all based on their experiences with it. I would recommend openSUSE for someone who is new to Linux just because I've had good experiences with it and it seems to work very well. Fedora Core 5, one of the problem is mp3 support, you have to get it, it's not included with the installation. Not saying FC5 sucks or anything. Every distro have their strong and weak spot.
