Asterisk Downloads | Asterisk

I have installed the Asterisk 1.8.1.1 Source Tarball and unzipped it, Now I'm looking for the commands or way to install the software and get it up and running on my Ubuntu 10.10 OS

A Google Search only turned up old versions installs that were not clear enough to convert to the 1.8 in the format that I downloaded it.

Thank you for any and all help
~ FusIonX

Usual commands for all sources after unzipped and decompressed (minor variations sometimes apply), in order.

cd /directory/of/source
./configure
make
make install

Note that the ./configure command should tell you if you do or do not have all the dependencies met, if you don't you'll need to install those first. Let me know if that works or not, if not I'll take a closer look at that specific program for ya.

Marc

Thank you Marc for the help,

It looks as if that got me a bit further, but here is the read out of my Terminal.

See all those lines that say 'Checking for..... no'? Means you're missing a lot of stuff, and ./configure did not finish correctly thus make did not work. I found thison google from a simple search for 'asterisk ubuntu' . If you go there you'll see at the beginning of the instructions a couple of lines of apt-get install, and a bunch of different things to install, those are the dependencies, run those commands to make sure you have them all and then try again.

Marc

Unfortunately, I can not get any of that to work. Also that was a web page I looked at prier to making this thread but it makes reference to version 1.4 then 1.6... I'm trying for Version 1.8 and it looks as though the files may be made for 1.4

I get as far as
# cd zaptel-1.4.12.1
# ./configure
# make
# make install

then it fails, also the second link down does not work. "http://downloads.asterisk.org/pub/telephony/libpri/libpri-1.4.10.1.tar.gz"

Ok, I guess you didn't understand what I said in my previous post. Do this part of the instructions:

Packages Required for Asterisk Installation
There are quite a few packages ubuntu will require in order to complete the installation of asterisk on ubuntu successfully, these include running kernel 2.6 of linux, and appropriate packages to execute C programs.

To install the required packages enter root mode using

Sudo su

Apt-get –y install linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-essential

automake autoconf bison flex libtool libncurses5-dev libssl-dev

subversion svn-buildpackage

apt-get –y install cvs build-essential automake autoconf bison flex libtool libncurses5-dev libssl-dev libgsm1 libgsm1-dev

apt-get –y install sysvconfig **required to start services**

Note: if packages fail to install try separating the packages and installing them individually.

Sorry If I make this frustration due to not understanding, But Thank you very much for your dedicated help..

fusionx@ubuntu:~$ sudo su
root@ubuntu:/home/fusionx# Apt-get –y install linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-essential
No command 'Apt-get' found, did you mean:
Command 'apt-get' from package 'apt' (main)

I removed the -y and it ran

alright after running ./configure again

but at the end:

Oh, yeah, linux is case sensitive. Quick man page check just shows that the -y option just forces a 'yes' answer to any questions that it pops up, its not necessary. I downloaded and ran the ./configure on my machine, first difference from yours was that it found g++ and then skipped all those other checks that you had right after it, and went on to finish (which presented me with a cool ASCII art of an asterisk inside a quote bubble, hehe, nice)

g++ is the GNU C compiler, I think it comes in the build-essentials package for Ubuntu. Let me know what you get from there.

You could do an 'apt-get install libxml2' if you want that (doesn't sound likes its essential though). Then try the 'make' again.
