Download Speeds

i just found out that my dad gets (we are on the same network) download speeds around 500 kb/sec. i have a linksys card because my motherboard port broke somehow. maybe that could have an affect? the only time i started having slow downloads was after the motherboards port broke. he uses 98 and i have xp.

If someone else on the same network has 500kb/s download speeds, that changes the situation completely. It is possible you have a problem with your hardware, especially if the problem started when you changed you hardware.
It does sound to me llike more of a software problem to me.
My advice is to take the network card from your fathers computer and try it in your machine. If you are getting fast connections again, then it was hardware, and you must get another card, otherwise, back to the drawing board.

i have spybot, but it wont update - it always locks up.
does anyone know any more free spyware scanners?

Try ad-aware. It's available at www.downlaods.com

Also, firefox should block most spyware if it is up to date.

I guess i could go and buy a network card at computer goodwill or something...

You can try it, but I wouldn't waste too much money on it if I were you, incase that is not the problem.

Just go out and buy a new network card for $20. I don't think that's affecting your download speeds.
