Documenting, design/layout of a network

As the new guy in work, i was asked to document the existing network. I'm assigned in making a new layout for a new room. I dont where to start and how to do it. Can you guys help the new-in-the-field-guy? Thanks a lot.

Sounds to me like you have been given a 'test' assignment to see how well you can A) follow orders, B) how you think a problem to the end.

At this point I say you have failed.

HINT: start by asking where all the switchs, routers and other equipment is located.

Starting at the bottom of the TCP/IP stack (Layer 1) would be the best bet (As mentioned above). Then working your way up, mapping things out as you go.
