My point is the gold wires are microscopic and that it doesn't take much to break connections.

It just seems to fit that his GPUs were having some real problems letting him adjust voltage, then when swapping the cards around to sort a firmware issue it suddenly bricks the board

could be ESD like you say, we'll probably never know!
