Common Screen Resolutions

Hey everybody, its been a long time, but im back.
anywho, i've got a question for ya.

I know that there are several different screen resolutions out there, but I need to find 2 of the best ones... here is the reason: I run a small anime-art gallery website and I make desktop wallpapers. However, I don’t have any idea what sizes to make them. I understand there are 2 different types of screen sizes. One is kinda square, and the other is “wide”.

What I am going to try to do, is have 2 different sizes for one wallpaper. One for the square-screens, and one for the wide-screens. And each of those types, will be a fairly large resolution, because you can shrink images quite a bit before you loose quality, however you loose quality at even the slightest engagement.

So here is my question:

What is the most common/large resolution for each of the 2 different screen types?

for a normal square one 1600x1200

wide screen 1600x900 or maybe 1600x1024,1920x1200

lol, i don't know. perhaps it would be wise for me to fully understand a few simple things first.

1: how many different shapes of screens are there? like, there are "square" screens (1024x768), "long" screens (1280x960) and "wide" screen (1280x800) is this correct?

the ultimate question: "what are the 'common' large resolutions for the different screen shapes?"

long monitors? ok now you've lost me heres what i think your on about:

now the wide ones have obviously different resolution to fit their width such as the ones I posted before above.

These are basic resolution sizes for 'normal' monitors.

800*600
1024*768
1152*864
1280*768
1280*1024
1400*1050
1600*1200
1792*1344
1800*1440
1920*1080
1920*1200
1920*1440
2048*1536
I cannot make a background for every resolution, so I need to know 2 (passably even 3) of the key sizes.

They aren't "square" or "wide" they are 4:3, 16:10, 16:9, etc.

Resolutions can be different with different monitors ... I don't really see where you're going with this...


4:3:
15" = 1024x768
17" = 1280x1024
19" = either 1280x1024 or 1600x1200
20.1" = 1600x1200
21" = 1600x1200

16:10
17" = 1280x800 or 1440x900
19" = 1440x900
20.1" = 1680x1050
21" = 1680x1050
22" = 1680x1050
24" = 1920x1200
30" = 2560x1600

CRT's ... 4:3 ...
15" = up to 1280x960 usually
17" = up to 1600x1200 usually
19" = up to 1600x1200 usually
21" CRT = up to 2048x1536

Basically just make two - 2560x1600 and 2048x1536, because they can scale them with the "stretch" mode.
