I need to check an external hard drive (carrying digital film) for viruses through a firewire cable. I have a norton antivirus program on windows xp (non pro). Does the external drive have to have a particular op system or file system for me to run a virus scan on it? And if I find a virus can norton remove the virus over the firewire connection?

Also do AVI files tend to get viruses?

Norton antivirus should be enough to scan for a virus. The external harddrive has a FAT or FAT32 filesystem. There is no particular operating system, its more of a big floppy. You can just plug the HD in and let it install. Then, if the virus execute, Norton will catch it. If nothing happens, run a hard drive scan on the HD. There might be settings but try to do a full scan. AVI files can be infected with viruses but that is very unlike unless someone deliberately puts on in it.

Usually a external gets a letter, just tell norton to search that letter(drive).

AVI files, dont tend to be viruses. Unless they are like 30kb
