I used AVG on my dad's desktop, but apparently it doesn't play well with Windows 98. Great program though, I have been using it for years.

Windows 8: built-in Windows Defender
Windows 7 or XP: Microsoft Security Essentials

There's also Avira, Avast, and AVG, that first come to mind. I haven't used AVG in quite a while though; seemed to start getting pretty bloated when I last used it.

AVG has this annoying pop up that hounds you to purchase

yes- that is why i switched to Avast- but it has one as well. ..
